The fishing on Lake Koocanusa has been awesome. Check out the home page with the most recent catch. There are several pictures of the biggest rainbows we have caught. On a daily average we are boating 4 to 5 rainbows and 3 to 4 bull trout. Some of the rainbows are what I call shakers in the 1 to 2 lb class, the future. As you can see it only takes one or two big fish to make the day. We have lost a few big fish right behind the boat, or they break the line, be careful not to horse these fish. The real big rainbows have been going deep when hooked, different from the past years, most of the time they will jump and fight real hard. They still fight very hard but have been sounding, then try and jump to throw the hook real close to the boat, very exciting. The bull trout have been averaging 6 to 8 lbs and we took a few of the 9 to 10lb bulls to the taxidermist. Get up to Lake Koocanusa as it is the best kept secret.
Yes, the rainbow fishing has kicked in. I fished last Tuesday and we caught one rainbow at 12.5 lbs., we also boated 3 bulltrout the biggest was about 8lbs.
Last FridayI took a group of 4 guys up there and we caught 4 bulltrout and 3 rainbows, it was great. The largest rainbow was 9.5lbs, and the largest bulltrout was just over 8lbs.
Took a group from Missoula last Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was one of those days you brag about. We caught 7 rainbows and 6 bulltrout. The big rainbow was almost 13lbs and we caught two bulls that were just over 9lbs each. The two largest bulltrout trout were both males with alot of great color and had hook lower jaws. Both of them are on the way to the taxidermist. Sunday was alittle slower we boated 3 bull trout.
It is safe to say now is the time to fish Lake Koocanusa, and the other great thing was I only saw one other boat on the lake for all three days.
I will be posting the most recent catches on the home page of the web sight in the next couple of days.
Lake Koocanusa is truely a trophy rainbow fishery, and bulltrout fishery, by the way you can keep two bulltrout a year one a day per person with a bulltrout catch card from the FWP office, no charge.
